WEBINAR: Light pollution survey and mitigation implementation: A University Case Study

PRESENTERS:
Cassie Hage, Washington University in St. Louis

MODERATORS:
Don Ficken, DarkSky Missouri and Lights Out Heartland

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
To better understand light pollution hot spots, WashU Office of Sustainability partnered with the Facilities department to fly a drone at night to record lights from above. The study enabled more informed planning to target interior and exterior lighting automation in alignment with Lights Out Heartland and the spring and fall migrations. In addition, a list and protocol was developed for manually turning off non-essential exterior lighting and a communications campaign was developed to increase awareness across the campus community for how they can help birds, on campus and at home.

Our Goal

Turn lights out during bird migration to help birds travel safe.
