PROGRAM: BirdSafeSTL and Lights Out Heartland- Keeping Birds Safe in St. Louis: You Can Help Too!

WHERE:  Virtual or In-Person (see below)

DESCRIPTION:  St. Louis sits on one of the major migratory pathways of birds in North America – the Mississippi Flyway. The Mississippi Flyway is used by 60% of North American songbirds and 40% of North American waterfowl. That encompasses over 325 different bird species out of the 900+ species that can be found in the United States. Learn how the biology of birds causes light pollution and glass to be dangerous to them as they migrate through our area and forage in our urban and suburban landscapes. We will also describe how the BirdSafeSTL and Lights Out Heartland projects are working to protect birds and how you can help birds remain safe in the St Louis area too!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:

Our Goal

Turn lights out during bird migration to help birds travel safe.

LEARN MORE: Scientific evidence suggests that artificial light at night has negative and deadly effects on many creatures including amphibians, birds, mammals, insects and plants. Learn more at DarkSkyMissouri.org or DarkSky.org.
